Two Catholic priests from a suburb of Chicago were caught engaging in an alleged homosexual act inside a parked car at Miami Beach. Diego L. Berrio, 39, and Edwin M. Cortez, 30, both of whom reside at San Juan Diego Mission in Arlington Heights, Illinois, stand accused of engaging in oral sex on the afternoon of Labor Day inside a parked black Volkswagen on Ocean Drive.
The car had no tinting on its windows, exposing the homosexual activity to passersby on the street, which is frequented by tourists. According to a police report, Berrio was seated on the passenger seat of the vehicle while engaging in oral sex on Cortez, who was in the driver’s seat. Cortez’s trousers were unfastened and his genitals were exposed, according to the report. Because Cortez and Berrio were so thoroughly engaged in their stimulation, the reporting officer had to knock on a window to get their attention.
Both Berrio and Cortez were charged with lewd and lascivious behavior, while Cortez faces a charge of indecent exposure. Both Berrio and Cortez professed to be priests. The Archdiocese of Chicago is declining to comment but claimed that the incident is being examined.
Berrio, according to his biography on the San Juan Diego Mission website, was ordained as a priest in 2008 by Cardinal Francis George. He has been affiliated with St. Edna in Arlington Heights, Domitilla in Hillside, Illinois. He is listed as a judge and speaker of Spanish by the Metropolitan Tribunal of the Archdiocese of Chicago. He is a native of Colombia. A search on the archdiocesan website did not reveal any listing for Cortez.
