Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) was joined by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), and other Congressional Democrats early this morning for a press conference on the steps of the Capitol in response to President Donald Trump’s decision to fire Acting Attorney General Sally Yates over instructions she issued to Justice Department officials that they were not to defend the president’s executive order to bar temporarily immigrants from certain Muslim countries.
Trump tweeted this morning, “Nancy Pelosi and Fake Tears Chuck Schumer held a rally at the steps of The Supreme Court and mic did not work (a mess)-just like Dem party!”
Trump issued other tweets this morning demanding that Senate Democrats should relent and confirm his nomination of Sen. Jeff Sessions as the next U.S. Attorney General. He wrote, “When will the Democrats give us our Attorney General and rest of Cabinet!” He continued, “They should be ashamed of themselves!”
The Senate Judiciary Committee is weighing the confirmation of Sessions today. In his remarks, Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) excoriated Sessions. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) gave a spirited response, pointing out that he had voted to confirm Obama’s nominations of both Loretta Lynch and Erick Holder for Attorney General.
On January 27, Trump signed a sweeping executive order that suspended the refugee resettlement program for 120 days and barring immigrants from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen. The former Acting Attorney General Sally Yates, an Obama appointee, released a statement yesterday to the effect that she was not “convinced that the executive order is lawful.” Trump fired Yates, saying she “betrayed” the Department of Justice. Trump has appointed Dana Boete, a U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, to replace Yates, pending the expected confirmation of Session.
