In 1986, President Ronald Reagan earnestly tried to solve illegal immigration by compromising with Democrats.
Reagan would go along with amnesty in return for securing the border. Reagan kept his word by granting amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants.
The Democrats however did not keep their word and never provided promised funding to secure the border.
In his personal diary, Reagan lamented the fact that the Democrats never intended to keep their end of the deal and regretted making the deal at all because it did not end illegal immigration or keep America safe. In fact, it made the problem worse.
Fast-forward 32 years to today, President Trump is going down the same misguided road.
The president has offered amnesty to nearly 2 million illegal aliens. While I support the president’s policy of ending chain migration and the immigration lottery system, I remain firm in my opposition to DACA. I cannot support awarding DACA recipients with American citizenship.
Amnesty would invite more illegal immigration and disadvantage American workers. When you reward bad behavior, you get more of it.
Reagan learned his lesson in negotiating with Democrats on illegal immigration.
We should too.
