Speaking at an event at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C., Fatih Birol, who serves as executive director for the International Energy Agency (IEA), said on Tuesday that the United State will be the "undisputed leader" in gas and oil production for "years to come."
"With all the implications, this is the most important transformation we're seeing within the oil and gas industry," Fatah said delivering the IEA World Energy Outlook for 2017. Birol made similar remarks before the Senate Energy and Resources Committee hearing. He told senators that America's anticipated energy production dominance will be a result of a "shale revolution." Birol added in testimony at the Senate, "The U.S. is becoming the undisputed leader of oil and gas production worldwide."
Birol said that the growth of America's oil production is "unprecedented" in both size and rate of growth, even when compared to the increase in Saudi Arabia's production some 50 years ago. He also estimated that the U.S. will become the biggest exporter of natural gas by 2020. China, he said, will beome the biggest consumer. In addition, Birol warned senators that China's increasing need for energy will drive it to rival the United States for nuclear energy.
