An undercover video revealed that an auditor at the Government Accountability Office (GAO) is a member of a larger cabal of socialists within the federal government that is thwarting the efforts of the Trump administration. Released by Project Veritas, a transparency advocacy group that has produced similar videos in the past, Natarajan Subramanian is seen admitting to spending most of his time on the job at the GAO advancing the cause of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) party, of which he is a member. “No one knows I spent six hours yesterday doing social media for DSA.”

James O'Keefe is the founder and president of Project Veritas. In an announcement on Thursday, O'Keefe promised that the next installment may prove to provide the most damning evidence of socialist activity within the federal goverment. It will be released on Friday.

Subramanian described his party in stark terms to the undercover journalists, saying  “…it’s a socialist organization and we want to destroy capitalists.” He added, “We have a bunch of just like communists, like no prefix, and that’s basically me.” The socialist Subramanian also described how his collaborators stand in the way of President Trump’s agenda. “If you’re in an Executive Branch agency, you can slow ball things to a degree… maybe you get fired or resign or whatever, but you slowed [Trump’s agenda] down.” As evidence of his dedication to the socialist cause, Subramanian said, “Do I care more about having this job, or do I care more about the [DSA] movement, and I was like… obviously the movement.”

“I break rules every day… at any point I can get fired.”

This is the third in a series of videos Project Veritas has released. The groups says that it is an effort to “unmask the Deep State,” which many others have said is a conspiracy within the federal government that endangers civil liberties.

Project Veritas discovered that in addition to his work for the federal government, Subramanian manages social media and communications for Metro DC DSA. Subramanian admits that he conducts tasks for the DSA during working hours at his federal job. He says, “Everything that I’m doing with DSA is stuff that I’m not supposed to be doing for work… it’s explicitly prohibited. If they find out I could get in trouble, basically.”

In June 2018, during Metro DC DSA’s highly publicized confrontation of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, Subramanian admitted he secretly spent the majority of his government workday “…doing social media” for Metro DC DSA: “No one knows I spent six hours yesterday doing social media for DSA.”

While some of his coworkers at GAO know that Subramanian is a member of Metro DC DSA (i.e. socialists in the Washington DC area), he said that his agency superiors have not provided sufficient oversight. He said, “Management does not know. You have to be strategic about things like this.”

Subramanian is also quite open about the nature of his politics, and of his colleagues in Metro DC DSA: “We have a bunch of just communists, like no prefix, and that’s basically me. We [also] have some folks who are Trotskyists or Leninists.” Among them is a comrade who works for the Department of Defense, Subramanian said, who works on “…war planning stuff” relating to Syria.

Oversight

Subramanian appears to be aware that his political activity at work may be illegal and therefore keeps it secret. “Sometimes as a government employee, you have to keep it under wraps a little bit so you don’t get into trouble and that’s kind of what I try to do.” Aware that he could face a reprimand if discovered, he said, “That’s when I might get fired. If there’s like a camera above my cubicle looking down so they can see and zoom in and see what’s on my phone.”

Some government employees are required to submit financial disclosure forms prior to beginning their government jobs. According to Project Veritas, Subramanian provided excerpts of his financial disclosures. He revealed that he was deliberately vague on his disclosure forms regarding his involvement with Metro DC DSA so that his employers might be less likely to understand what was disclosed. Project Veritas has published excerpts of Subramanian’s disclosure forms. “I have informed them, I filed all the paperwork I needed to file, I was purposely a little bit vague about what kind of organization [Metro DC DSA] is…  I wasn’t like [I said], it’s a socialist organization and we want to destroy capitalists.”

Lackadaisical oversight

Subramanian disclosed on the GAO form that he spends “0-10 [hours] / week” working or volunteering for Metro DC DSA, but describes the activism on tape as “…kind of like a second job.” He spends, “…probably like 20 hours, 10-20 hours… depending on the week,” doing Metro DC DSA work. He admits that the requirements of his GAO employment allows him plenty of free time to do DSA tasks. “There’s no one looking over my shoulder. So like, a lot of times what I’ll do, and this is kind of what I’m doing right now, is like I’ll drink the night before, I tele-work and then I’m like, if I’m 15 minutes late to log on, no one checks.”

According to Subramanian, the GAO did not fully investigate what he does for Metro DC DSA. But he believes that what he does for Metro DC DSA “…would be fireable,” because “…all political activity is automatically outlawed.” He says, “… I break rules every day, at any point I can get fired for what I do with DSA.”

Subramanian is not the only government employee who also engages in political activity for the DSA. He revealed that “…a fair number of DSA employees are federal DSA people are federal employees… you see people from various agencies, usually executive branch.”

In an interview with Laura Ingraham on Wednesday evening, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that his agency is aware of the Project Veritas investigation. In the first video released by Project Veritas, a State Department official who belongs to DSA said that fellow socialists within the federal government are resisting the Trump White House, saying that they, “Resist everything. Every level. F*** sh*t up.”

Partial transcript follows:

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo: “Rest assured we’re aware of it and we’re taking a looking at it…”

Laura Ingraham: “If they’re going to be working against the administration they should go probably find another job?”

Pompeo: “Absolutely. If this is a mission on which you can’t sign up for it’s time to go do something else with your time.”
