Author and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich critiqued an interview that White House strategist Stephen Bannon gave on Tuesday. Bannon claimed that some colleagues at the White House are so frightened about possible changes in trade policy that they are "wetting themselves."  Bannon claimed later that he believed that the exchange with The American Prospect, a left-of-center outlet, was off the record.

"Oh, baloney. Steve Bannon is a professional," Gingrich said on Fox & Friends. Speaking on Thursday, Gingrich said of Bannon, "Maybe, if you're senior White House adviser, it's useful not to screw it up. ... If you're senior White House adviser, you make your argument in the Oval Office, you make your argument in the chief of staff's office."

Gingrich recalled that former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci, who went issued expletive-laden remarks in an interview with The New Yorker that included lewd remarks about Bannon: “This reminds me of Scaramucci. You don't go off and do this stuff."

Robert Kuttner of The American Prospect claimed that Bannon never asked for their conversation to be off the record.
