According to Portland police, a woman in Oregon shot and killed an intruder in her home when she discovered him in the pre-dawn hours in the bedroom of one of her children. Police responded to a call from Tara-Alexis Ford, who reported that she had fired on a stranger she found in her home at approximately 1:47 a.m. When officers arrived, they discovered a male corpse in the house.
The police statement contends that the 33-year-old mother of two daughters, ages 5 and 10, had returned to their home when she sighted the home invader. Allegedly, she used her pistol to shoot the 59-year-old man to death.
The intruder has been identified as David Daniel McCrary, 59, from Gresham OR. An autopsy determined that McCrary died of a single gunshot wound. Police say they do not know why McCrary broke into Ford's home. He did not have a significant criminal history. McCrary and Ford did not know each other and McCrary was not from the neighborhood.
McCrary broke into Ford's home through a back window, according to detectives. When Ford found him n the bedroom of her 10-year-old daughter, she shot him. Her daughter and five-year-old son were in a different bedroom at the time.
The investigation will determine whether she acted in self-defense and if Ford will face charges.
A woman from the neighborhood, Amber Murray, told KOIN 6 News that she had seen “a few squatters in and out of [the home]” before the family occupied the dwelling.
An autopsy was conducted today in Portland. Police are investigating the incident and will take the case before the Multnomah County District Attorney. The mother who defended her family is cooperating fully with the authorities looking into the incident. She has not been arrested.
In a separate incident in Multnomah County, former National League Football player Stanley Wilson II was arrested after being discovered naked and bleeding from a gunshot wound in a Portland backyard. The 33-year-old Stanford University grad had once played for the Detroit Lions and later became a resident of Portland.
A 78-year-old man alleged that when he found Wilson attempting to break into his home, he shot him. The incident happened at about 3:51 p.m. on June 22. The elderly Portland resident called emergency services, who came to take Wilson to hospital. He is expected to recover fully after receiving treatment at a local hospital. Wilson was charged on June 23 with two counts of attempted burglary and two counts of trespassing. That investigation is ongoing.
