MSNBC mistakenly aired footage of NBC journalist Kristen Welker telling an aide to Hillary Clinton’s campaign what questions to expect just before going to a live interview. In coverage following the Democratic presidential debate in Michigan, MSNBC anchor Ari Melber passed to Welker, who was speaking to Clinton’s director of communications Jen Palmieri. But because of technical audio issues, Welker did not know she was on air as she continued to speak with Palmieri.

“And I’m going to ask you about Flint,” Welker told Palmieri. It was after the problems with the audio were resolved that Welker and Palmieri continued the interview. Welker’s first question was about the Flint water crisis. “Let’s start with the issue of Flint,” Welker said. “…Tonight she came out for the first time calling for the resignation of the governor. Why tonight, and was that a last-minute decision to flip-flop?”

During the debate, Clinton called for the resignation of Michigan’s Republican Gov. Rick Snyder, as have many Democrats, progressives, and leftists, including Sen. Bernie Sanders, who had done so in the past and repeated last night in Flint. Clinton and Sanders clashed on several issues during the debate, including Second Amendment rights, Wall Street, and foreign trade issues. Michigan goes the polls on March 8 in a decisive primary race.
