CNN political commentator and Huffington Post Live host Marc Lamont Hill said today that black people are incapable of being racist because they do not have the required “institutional power” to “deploy racism.” His comments came in response to former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani. The Republican Giuliani doubled down on statements he made over the July 9-10 weekend in which he called on the parents of black children to teach respect for law enforcement officers. Giuliani, who is a Trump supporter, said today that as NYC mayor, he saved far more black lives than the current Black Lives Matter movement, which he deemed “racist.”

Hill said, “First of all, by the way, Black Lives Matter and the movement for black lives this morning issued a pledge which I tweeted out today calling for justice, calling for peace, and calling for togetherness in a moment where we’re attempting to be divided.”

“To say that the Black Lives Matter movement is racist is bizarre to me,” Hill said. “Not just because black people don’t have the institutional power to be racist or to deploy racism, but because the movement has called for justice, it’s called for demilitarization, it’s called for nonviolence.”

Hill did acknowledge, however, that there are undesirable elements in the Black Lives Matter movement. But he said that there is no reason to say that the movement is racist. “I’ve been to some Tea Party Rallies; there are racists there, but I wouldn’t say the Tea Party is racist as such,” he said. “I would say there are people who invaded and divert the movement and that’s what is happening here.”
