State Department spokesman Mark Toner, a holdover from the Obama administration, issued a statement in which the United States condemned "in the strongest terms the barbaric attacks on Christian places of worship" in Egypt on Sunday.
Noting that the attack, which has been claimed by the Islamic State, killed dozens of innocent worshippers on Palm Sunday, Toner expressed the condolences of the nation to the families and friends of the victims.
Notably absent from the press statement is that the culprits are Muslim terrorists. Both the Islamic State, and the Muslim Brotherhood of Egypt, have continuously persecuted Christians and other minorities in Egypt and elsewhere in the Middle East. In addition, the Islamic State has claimed responsibility for attacks outside of the region. Most recently, ISIS said that its operatives unleashed the deadly attack in Stockholm on Friday.
