Famed author and controversialist Ann Coulter said in an interview this week that she does not defend Donald Trump, of whom she has been a fervent supporter, for having published an unflattering photograph of Heidi Cruz, the wife of fellow Republican Ted Cruz.
Speaking to Milo Yiannopoulos, a writer for Breitbart, Coulter said that Trump’s behavior was upsetting. "I’m a little testy with our man right now," she said. Coulter was an early supporter of Trump. She introduced him, for example, at an Iowa rally in August 2015 and has since spoke of him approvingly.
Yiannopoulos answered wryly in the interview, "You are? Daddy’s annoyed you?" referring to Trump. Coulter answered, "Our candidate is mental. Do you realize our candidate is mental? It’s like constantly having to bail out your sixteen-year-old son from prison.” Then she said, "OK, let’s move past last night’s tweet."
But Coulter pressed on: "This is the worst thing he’s done," and added that comments Trump made last year about Sen. John McCain's (R-AZ) war record was also difficult to countenance. She said, "Everything else I could probably defend. I could, I think, off the top of my head. Most of it — it was them overreacting," she said, referring to liberals. "But the McCain thing, that was — OK it was a dumb joke, it didn’t work. Oh, well. Didn’t kill him…"
Coulter confirmed that she was referring to a retweet Trump made when Yiannopoulos mentioned that Trump retweeted "a picture of Cruz’s wife and a picture of Melania." "That’s exactly the tweet I’m talking about," Coulter said. "No, you can’t defend it. This is when we’re bailing our sixteen-year-old out of jail."
