Famed legal expert Alan Dershowitz told MSNBC on Friday said that the guilty plea by former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort was a "big win" for special counsel Robert Mueller in his investigation. "Potentially, [Manafort's guilty plea] opens up lots of doors that probably haven't been opened before," said Dershowitz. "I think from the point of view of Mueller, this is a big win, this is a big gain because he gets access to somebody," he added.

Manfort pleaded guilty to two federal charges and will cooperate with Mueller, who continues his probe into supposed dealings between the Trump campaign and the Russian government during the 2016 election. Manafort’s cooperation may become significant to the investigation because of his relationship to the president. However, Dershowitz said that the importance of any cooperation on the part of Manafort will depend on what he knows and is willing to share.

According to the plea agreement, Manafort must cooperate “fully, truthfully, completely, and forthrightly” with the Department of Justice in any and all matters that the government deems to be relevant.

Dershowitz has frequently criticized Mueller's probe and defended President Donald Trump on cable news appearances. A lifelong Democrat, Dershowitz has said that he voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016.
