A leader of the NAACP, Bishop Talbert Swan, sparked controversy on Friday after making posts on social media that many deemed racist. On Friday, Swan -- a pastor at an evangelical Christian community in Springfield, Illinois -- tweeted, “White women are very happy with white supremacy” and noted that a majority of white women voted for Donald Trump, Florida Gov.-elect Ron DeSantis (R), Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.), Georgia Gov.-elect Brian Kemp (R). He went on to assert, “They’ve supporter bigotry, racism, misogyny, pedophilia and sexual abuse. Pure trash.”

After a flurry of criticism, the leftist Swan tweeted in self-defense: “No, I said voting in support of bigotry, racism, misogyny, pedophilia and sexual abuse was pure trash. I said what I said. Write articles, troll all my social media, call my church, make threats. I ain’t scared, my parents didn’t raise no punks.”

On Instagram, one of Swan’s followers, who identified as “status_queen,” observed, “This is their way of trying to silence you Bishop. They are nothing but white devils. I told you that you’re doing something right they are attacking trying to intimidate and discredit you. Twisting your words is only the beginning these devils have no souls.” Another follower commented, “Well, any white woman who supports bigotry, racism, misogyny, pedophilia, and sexual abuse is a Pure Trash! In fact anyone of any gender/race/sexual orientation who supports Trump is pure trash. Yup, come at me bitches, my parents didn’t raise no punks! 😊”

This is not the first time that Swan has stirred controversy. On November 18, Swann wrote disparagingly about “liberal white woman ‘allies,’” and included a GIF of a sobbing white actress from the comedic “The Office” television series. The tweet read: “Yet again, liberal white woman ‘allies’ centering themselves, crying up in my mentions, destroying the convo [sic], policing my tone and demanding that I use language that will make my tweets more palatable to them. Boo hoo Becky, boo hoo. Grab a hanky and step away from the TL [sic].”

In August, Twitter moved to permanently ban Swann. However, he was ultimately reinstated. In an email to Swan, Twitter informed him that his account was suspended because of “hateful conduct.” Twitter bans repeated and/or non-consensual slurs, epithets, racist and sexist remarks and tropes, or other content that degrades someone. Swan believes that the suspension was in response to a request he received to follow Candace Owens, a black conservative and critic of the Black Lives Matter movement. "I responded by writing 'No thanks, I'm on the no coon diet'," he said. Swan asserted that the use of “coon” is racist when used by anyone other than black people.

Swan currently has over 85,000 Twitter followers.
