A knife attack in northern China has yielded the deaths of at least seven schoolchildren in addition to 19 wounded. The attack occurred near a secondary school in Mizhi County in Shaanxi Province at approximately 6 p.m. local time on Friday.

An amateur video recorded that students were lying wounded on the ground while a young male suspect was taken away by police.

Knife attacks have seen an uptick in China in recent years. The most devastating was an attack in March 2015 at a rail station in Kunming, Yunnan Province, in southern China. In that attack, 29 persons were murdered. There were also 100 wounded in the terrorist attack, which Chinese authorities linked to the Muslim Uighur separatist movement.
