Gay music icon Elton John will perform at President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration, according to Anthony Scaramucci -- a member of Trump’s transition team. Speaking on the BBC’s “HARDtalk” program, Scaramucci proclaimed that Trump will be the first president to have a “pro-gay rights” stance. An Elton John spokesman later threw shade on the claim.
“Elton John is going to be doing our concert on the mall for inauguration,” said Scaramucci. Having singer John perform for the inauguration, said Scaramucci “shows our commitment to gay rights.” The 69-year-old John announced his homosexual preference back in 1988. He married filmmaker David Furnish in 2014 in England. “This will be the first American president in US history that enters the White House with a pro-gay rights stance,” Scaramucci said.
So far, John has yet to confirm whether he will indeed play for the inauguration ceremonies in Washington DC on January 20. John was a vocal supporter of Hillary Clinton during the presidential campaign and went so far to say that Trump is a “barbarian.” In October, John said “We need a humanitarian in the White House, not a barbarian,” and added that Clinton stands for ”equality, decency, kindness and respect.”
Trump often played John’s music at rallies during the campaign. John’s hit song, “Tiny Dancer,” was frequently played. John was not pleased by the practice. “I don’t really want my music to be involved in anything to do with an American election campaign,” he said in an interview with The Guardian of the UK. “I’m British. I’ve met Donald Trump, he was very nice to me, it’s nothing personal, his political views are his own, mine are very different, I’m not a Republican in a million years. Why not ask Ted f−−−ing Nugent? Or one of those f−−−ing country stars? They’ll do it for you,” John added.
According to the BBC, however, a spokesperson for John "categorically denied" that "Sir" Elton will perform for Trump in January. "There is no truth in this at all," said the representative.
Elton John will perform in Dubai, the capital of the United Arab Emirates
on December 15. Accompanying him in concert will be singer Selena Gomez, electronic music band Major Lazer, and All Saints. Under a modified form of Islamic sharia law, those persons found guilty of homosexual acts can be imprisoned for 10 years if convicted in the United Arab Emirates. Homosexuals in other countries, such as Saudi Arabia and Iran, are sentenced to death, usually by hanging.
