Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), who was the first Muslim elected to Congress, said in an interview that President Donald Trump’s executive order to temporarily ban the citizens of seven Muslim countries from entering the United States is a cause of organizing “mass protests.” Ellison is a leading candidate to serve as chairman of the Democratic National Committee. In an interview with the Washington Post that Trump must be stopped with “people power.” We need mass rallies. We need them all over the country,” he said.
Ellison was involved in a protest in Miami-Dade County, which has announced plans that it will cooperate with the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement. He was in Houston to seek the votes needed to accede to the chairmanship of the party.
Ellison joins numerous Democrats in criticizing Trump. Among Republicans, among those who critical of the executive order are Senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham have issued a joint declaration condemning it.
