This week begins the hotly anticipated debate in the Senate over immigration reform, which Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) promised to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) in order to end the Democrats' hostage crisis over the federal budget.

McConnell will be using a House-passed "shell bill," with no underlying immigration text – not even the "framework" issued by the White House - which will then create a legislative "free-for-all" with any amendment that receives 60 votes or more winding up in the final bill.

America's national security should not be treated like a "county fair" where the winner takes the prize.

Already the majority of Democrats in the Senate have stated they will support nothing short of a clean "DREAM Act," that grants amnesty to millions of illegal aliens, with no consideration for border security or other aspects of immigration enforcement.

This is a critical moment in the fight to protect American workers from job stealing legislation that would grant a massive amnesty to millions of illegal aliens. Congress needs to be reminded they were elected to defend the interests of U.S. citizens and legal immigrants, not special interest groups and illegal aliens who would benefit from open borders.

Dan Stein is president of the Federation for American Immigration Reform.
