Speaking in an interview on SiriusXM, Chelsea Clinton said that eliminating abortion would be “unconscionable” and “un-Christian” and thus return the country to the era before the Supreme Court’s monumental Roe v. Wade decision that legalized the practice. “When I think about all of the statistics that are painful of what women are confronting today in our country, and what even more women confronted pre-Roe and how many women died and how many more women were maimed because of unsafe abortion practices, we just can’t go back to that,” Clinton said.
“Like that’s unconscionable to me,” said the daughter of former President Bill Clinton and former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. “And also, I’m sure that this will unleash another wave of hate in my direction, but as a deeply religious person, it’s also un-Christian to me.”
In August, daughter Clinton drew criticism when she argued that legalized abortion is a benefit to the national community, prompting, she said, her critics to compare her to “slave owners and Nazis.” On the Thursday broadcast, she said, “I’ve had the temerity, as the Supreme Court did in 1992 in Planned Parenthood v. Casey, to point out that our ability to participate fully in our society, including economically, hinges on our ability to make choices for our bodies and our families.”
Former first daughter Chelsea was a featured speaker in the “Rise Up for Roe Tour” in August, which sought to rally opposition to Supreme Court pick Brett Kavanaugh and the purported threat he poses to Roe v. Wade. For his part, Kavanaugh has said that the decision is “settled law.” This assurance has nevertheless brought push-back from Democrats who have sought to block debate about his qualifications.
