President-elect Donald Trump went to Twitter today to denounce the Affordable Care Act, a.k.a. Obamacare. He wrote in the first of several tweets today, "The Democrats, lead by head clown Chuck Schumer, know how bad ObamaCare is and what a mess they are in."

Trump then wrote: "Instead of working to fix it, they do the typical political thing and BLAME. The fact is ObamaCare was a lie from the beginning." Trump issued his remarks just one day after Republicans and Democrats, respectively, sought to eliminate or defend the ACA: Obama’s chief legislative legacy.

The GOP contends that Obamacare is collapsing, having cited state-level health-insurance marketplaces. They say that a "stable" transition is needed before it can be replaced. For their part, Republicans want a "market-based" approach that would give funds to consumers to find their own insurance without compelling them to do so. Democrats say that if Obamacare is precipitously repealed, approximately 22 million people would then see their healthcare vanish. Som provisions are popular, they argue. Under the current law, insurers cannot deny medical coverage on the basis of pre-existing conditions. Democrats want only small reforms to Obamacare.

At the Capitol, Vice President-elect Mike Pence met with Republicans about repealing the ACA, while Obama met with Democrats. CNN reported that Obama told Democrats at the private affair today that they should call the GOP reform “Trumpcare.” Democrats, Obama reportedly said, should not come to the “rescue” of Republicans by endorsing a replacement healthcare plan. In his tweets today, Trump cited the claim Obama once made that by passing Obamacare, customers would be assured that “if you like your doctor, you can keep them."

However, since then a declining number of insurers are participating, while lessened coverage networks have meant limited health-provider options. Trump called on members of Congress to show bipartisan comity on the issue. "It is time for Republicans & Democrats to get together and come up with a healthcare plan that really works — much less expensive & FAR BETTER!" Trump tweeted. The Department of Health and Human Services also released its most recent update for the 2017 open enrollment today. 8.8 million consumers signed on for a plan or renewed thorugh Obamacare as of December 31. That is up by 200,000 over last year.

Members of the progressive left, including Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) have long called for a single-payer system for all Americans and residents. On January 4, Sanders went to the floor of the Senate to once again say that the U.S. is the only major country that has not yet enshrined healthcare as a basic right. "Trump knows that single payer is the better system," Progressives object to the current healthcare system, which they believe profits off of sick people. They also want to ensure that every hospital, regardless of ethics or religious affiliation, should be required to conduct procedures such as abortions and sex -reassignment surgeries.
