According to South Korean President Moon Jae-in, President Donald Trump should be offered the Nobel Peace Prize for working to bring to and end the growing tensions between North Korea and South Korea over nuclear weapons. On Monday, Moon said, "President Trump should win the Nobel Peace Prize. What we need is only peace." After Trump had imposed sanctions and threatened military action, Moon believes that the harsh stance hastened the negotiations.

On Friday, Moon met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, resulting in an agreement to bring an end to the decades-long armed truce between the two countries and work toward the "complete denuclearization" of the peninsula. This was the first inter-Korean summit meeting since 2007.

Trump himself is scheduled to meet the North Korean dictator in May or June. He has been in touch regularly with Moon. During his first year in office, Trump threatened to “totally destroy” North Korea and bring down "fire and fury" on the totalitarian nation. In 2017, North Korea showed that it had the capability to strike the U.S. with a missile and has a thermonuclear weapon that is many times stronger than the bombs the U.S. used on Japan in 1945. The Trump administration pushed for sanctions on the hermit country. Trump pressured Chinese President Xi Jinping to pressure North Korea. China then cut some trade with North Korea that led to a serious economic decline.

In January, Moon said Trump "deserves big credit for bringing about the inter-Korean talks. It could be a resulting work of the US-led sanctions and pressure."
