On Thursday, Fox News Channel's Tucker Carlson questioned in the opening segment of "Tucker Carlson Tonight" the integrity of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Examining the upshot following the Las Vegas mass shooting that took the lives of 58 people last month, Carlson pointed to numerous unanswered questions. For example: Why did authorities allow a break-in at the home of shooter Stephen Paddock? Motives? What happened to the hard drive on his computer? What was the real timeline of the incident? Why did hotel security guard Jesus Campos go to Mexico soon after the shooting?

While admitting that he is not suggesting there was a conspiracy, he said that a "terrifying" answer to his question is incompetence. Other instances include the fact that the FBI had been investigating Muslim shooter Omar Mateen for ten months, but failed to hinder his planning or execution of the June 2016 Pulse nightclub massacre that left 49 people dead and 58 injured in Orlando.

More recently, Carlson said that the agency may have been aware of Sayfullo Saipov -- who is the suspect in the deadly Halloween rampage in New York City -- as well as Boston Marathon bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev and Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan. He said that questions also remain about how the FBI under Director James Comey dealt with the probe into Hillary Clinton’s private email server, as well as the hacking of the Democratic National Committee emails.

"How does behavior like that restore public confidence in federal law enforcement?" Carlson said, pointing to leaks of sensitive details about investigations. "It doesn't, of course, and it shouldn't. We have a right to be worried about the FBI. There is no more powerful agency in this country."

"We need to be absolutely certain the FBI is worthy of the power we give them. What is happening in Las Vegas right now is one of many reasons to wonder if they are."

In a tweet, President Donald Trump noted his approval of the "Tucker Carlson Tonight" segment. The president added that Comey's leadership was a "disaster." He wrote: “The @TuckerCarlson opening statement about our once cherished and great FBI was so sad to watch. James Comey's leadership was a disaster!”
