At the first Democratic presidential debate, Sen. Bernie Sanders said he was “sick and tired” of hearing about Hillary Clinton’s “damn” emails, the Vermonter has apparently changed his mind. In an interview on CNN, Sanders now says that Clinton’s use of a private email server during her tenure as Secretary of State is indeed a “very serious issue.” His comment came less than 24 hours before the February 1st Iowa caucuses. He added that he did not want to politicize the issue because there is a “legal process” involved.
On January 29, the Obama administration announced that 22 more emails from Clinton’s private email server would not be released because they had been classified as top secret. Among the many emails already released are some from President Obama himself. An FBI investigation is going forward, while rumors are afloat in Washington over perceived frictions between the investigatory agency and the White House concerning the investigation.
Also on January, White House spokesman Josh Earnest indicated that FBI officials say that Clinton is not currently being investigated. In response, one of Fox News' top reporters, Catherine Herridge, told viewers:
That statement by Josh Earnest has got the back up of our contacts at the FBI and Justice Department for two reasons… They are SUPER PISSED OFF to use a technical term. Number one, Josh Earnest has absolutely no clearance or visibility in the FBI investigation. Number two, they say it really seems part of a troubling pattern from the White House because the president earlier said he did not see any national security implications to the Clinton emails and then we found out he had never been briefed.
CNN’s “State of the Union” host Jake Tapper asked “Should voters take from those comments that you think nothing was done wrong when it comes to how Secretary Clinton handled classified information, or is that not a fair–?”
Sanders butted in while wagging his finger, “No, no. No, that is not, I think, a fair assessment. I think this is a very serious issue. I think there is a legal process right now taking place … I get criticized. ‘Bernie, why don’t you attack Hillary Clinton?’ There is a legal process taking place. I do not want to politicize that issue. It is not my style.”
