Reports have emerged that Ilhan Omar, a Somalian immigrant who is aiming to become the first Muslim woman to occupy a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, may have married her brother, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, a British subject. After Omar was elected to her current seat in the Minnesota legislature in 2016, allegations were made that she married her own brother in 2009 and remained legally his wife. They divoreced in December 2017. Additionally, PJ Media identified Elmi’s father as the same man that Omar has always publicly claimed as her father: Nur Said Elmi Mohamed.
According to a report by PJ Media, official high school records and other sources support the claim that Elmi is Omar’s brother. Writer David Steinberg of PJ Media has submitted information he uncovered during his investigation to the U.S. Attorney’s office in Minnesota, citing multiple possible state and federal felonies.
Omar, a progressive Democrat, is running to replace outgoing U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.), the first Muslim to serve in Congress, who is campaigning for Minnesota Attorney General. Ellison is currently embroiled in accusations that he physically abused a former girlfriend. Omar is running against Republican Jennifer Zielinski.
Omar has steadily denied allegations that she married someone to help with his immigration status, describing them as "absolutely false and ridiculous." She and her current husband live with their three children in Minneapolis.
Earlier this month, Minnesota state lawmaker Steve Drazkowski accused Omar of improper charges to her campaign committee for travel expenses in the amount of $3,000. The charges were made for both foreign and domestic travel. Drazkowski has made public the correspondence he has received that the Minnesota Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board confirmed that regulators have found cause to investigate. In July, Omar said she would return $2,500 in speaking fees that were in violation of Minnesota legislative rules.
Also, Minnesota Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Chair Carolyn Flynn said the board will investigate allegations that Omar’s legislative campaign committee paid for immigration and tax services that may have benefited Omar personally.
Omar has been endorsed by the Council on American-Islamic Relations, which has also raised funds for her campaign. CAIR is an unindicted conspirator in a federal case against Muslim charities that were found to support terrorism.
