Oliver Funes Machado told 911 dispatchers that he stabbed and decapitated his mother "because I felt like it," according to a police affidavit. In addition, according to a sworn statement by Detective A.R. Roberts of Franklin County, North Carolina, the 18-year-old man told a dispatcher that “he stabbed her ‘like eight times’ and left the knife in her mouth.”
When officers arrived at the home where the horrific murder occurred, Funes Machado was found outside holding a butcher knife in one hand and his mother’s severed head in the other. His 4-year-old sister and 2-year-old brother were at home at the time, but were unharmed. Their father was away at work. According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman Bryan Cox, the suspect is from Honduras and was residing in the United States illegally.
The name of the deceased mother is Yesenia Beatriz Funez Machado. Her body was found inside her home.
Funes Machado was charged on March 6, the day of the crime, with first-degree murder after he called 911 to report that he had killed his mother. When police arrived, he was still speaking on the telephone with dispatchers. In the home, investigators a large kitchen knife covered in blood, bloody shoeprints, as well as bloody clothing.
Funes Machado’s public defender, attorney C. Boyd Sturges III, is claiming that his client has substantial mental issues. Investigators found medications in the home that are prescribed for psychosis and schizophrenia. He has been transferred to Central Prison in Raleigh. He will next appear in court on March 14.
The family had been living at the home since June 2016. On March 7, friends and family of the deceased came to the scene to remove belongings.
