A recent survey revealed that barely 24 percent of congressional Republicans endorse funding President Trump’s border wall concept. According to USA Today, only 69 of the 292 Republicans on Capitol Hill said ‘yes,’ when asked whether they fully endorse building the wall -- Trump’s signature campaign promise. Among them, according to the report, there were three Republicans who oppose the funding level, several others evaded a direct answer, while the majority refused to respond to the question.
As part of a national security spending package, the House of Representatives $1.6 billion in startup funding in July that included $658 billion for the Defense Department and $78 billion for the Department of Veterans Affairs. Funding for the border wall was added belatedly. Five Democrats voted in favor of the wall and five Republicans voted against it.
Democrats, according to the survey, are forthrightly against Trump’s wall. Of the 240 congressional Democrats, 133 answered the survey and nearly every one said “no.”
So far, the Senate has not taken up the measure, while Congress has passed a stop-gap spending bill in order to fund the federal government for several months. The legislative battle over funding the border wall and other presidential priorities have thus been delayed until December.
Claiming that they had struck a deal with the president, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said that they would move legislation to provide a path to legal residence and eventual citizenship for the so-called DREAMers: the approximately 800,000 young illegal aliens who were brought into the country as children.
There were five Democrats, Rep. Sanford Bishop of Georgia, Rep. Charlie Crist of Florida, Rep. Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey, and Reps. Tom O’Halleran and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona, who voted in favor of funding the wall.
