Pope Francis was reportedly saddened by the news that two Catholic nuns have been joined in a civil union in a hush-hush ceremony at Pinerolo, near Turin on September 28. The two religious sisters, identified by the media as Federica (44) and Isabel (40).
A daily newspaper of Rome, La Repubblica, interviewed the two women -- one Italian and one South American -- decided to wed civilly so as to counter the "convenient but false" choice of living together in a convent as others do. The pair met while serving as missionaries in Guinea-Bissau.
Vatican Deputy Secretary of State Monsignor Angelo Becciu wrote a tweet, saying "How much sadness on the Pope's face when I read him the news of the two 'married' nuns!"
