Fox News anchor Chris Wallace was dismissive on Friday of assertions that revelations from a leaked conversation between attorney Michael Cohen and then-candidate Donald Trump -- Cohen's client -- will mean any legal jeapordy or political damage for the president. Speaking with Sandra Smith on Fox News' "America's Newsroom," Wallace spoke about Cohen's claim that the president approved Donald Trump Jr.'s meeting with a Russian lawyer at Trump Tower in 2016. While Wallace acknowledged that Cohen’s claim suggests that Trump did indeed know about the meeting, he said that he does not believe that the White House will face significant blowback or new questions about the president's supposed connections to Russia.

“It seems to me the worst that you could say, assuming that Cohen is telling the truth now, is that Donald Trump lied back in 2017. But so what?" Wallace said. "It’s not admirable, you would hope he wouldn’t, but it is not breaking the law: lying to the media. He certainly wouldn’t be the first president, if he did, who had done so. And even the meeting itself – while it certainly doesn’t seem praise-worthy that American political candidates or their team would be meeting with a Russian lawyer to try to get dirt on Hillary Clinton that was being offered to them – that falls a long way from any hint of collusion between Trump and the Kremlin.”

Unless Cohen provides evidence for his claims, Wallace said, the issue remains a matter of Trump’s word against Cohen's. It will not he said, have a significant impact on the the probe into Trump's alleged connections to Russia being led by special counsel Robert Mueller.
